Short answers about how Mippoo works and how to use it.
How does clipboard history work?
While Mippoo is running, it notices every new copy and adds an item to the top of your history, with the icon of the app you copied from and the time. There’s nothing special to learn: ⌘C and the Copy command work in any app.
- Whatever was on the clipboard before Mippoo started doesn’t end up in the history.
- Identical copies in a row are saved once.
- If you copy several times within about half a second, only the last copy may be saved.
- The source app is the one whose window was active at the moment of copying, so it can occasionally be wrong.
Which formats are supported?
Plain text, formatted text (RTF, RTFD, HTML), links, images (PNG, JPEG, TIFF and other formats macOS understands), files and PDF. When you copy an item again, every saved format comes back, not just the plain text.
- For a file, Mippoo keeps a reference to it, not a copy: if the file is moved or deleted, you can’t open it from the history.
- Empty text, text over 1 MB, items over 32 MB and app-specific private formats aren’t saved.
How do I find something I copied?
Press ⌘F and start typing: the list keeps only items that contain your text. Search looks at item text and file names, ignores case and works together with filters:
- by type: text, links, images, files;
- by the app you copied from — you can pick several;
- the Favorites section in the sidebar.
The list shows the 200 most recent matching items. To reach an older one, refine the search or the filter.
How do I copy an item again?
Double-click the item, or select it and press ⌘C. You can also click Copy in the preview panel or choose Copy from the context menu.
The item goes back to the clipboard with every saved format, ready to paste with ⌘V as usual. Mippoo itself never pastes anything into other apps.
Where is my history stored?
Only on your Mac, in Mippoo’s Application Support folder: the history.sqlite database and the payloads folder with item contents. Mippoo doesn’t send your history to a server; the app goes online only for updates.
- The history is stored unencrypted.
- It holds up to 1,000 items and up to 256 MB of data. When a limit is reached, the oldest items are removed automatically; favorites stay.
More in Privacy.
How do I clear my history?
A single item: Delete in the context menu or the preview panel. The whole history: the “…” menu in the window toolbar, then Clear All History….
- The confirmation dialog lets you keep favorites (selected by default) or delete everything.
- Clearing affects the whole history regardless of search and filters, and it can’t be undone.
What happens to passwords?
Mippoo skips copies that an app marks as concealed, transient or auto-generated, which is what password managers usually do. On top of that, copies from 1Password, Bitwarden and the Passwords app are never recorded.
A password copied without such a marker — say, from a note or a web page — can end up in the history. You can delete that item by hand. Keep in mind that the history is stored unencrypted.
Which macOS versions are supported?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple Silicon.
Mippoo follows the light or dark appearance of macOS. You can get the app on the download page.
